Appliance hookups, new runs and leak response

Gas Line Repair and Installation in Brighton, CO

Gas work has one rule above all others: if you smell gas, get everyone out and call from a safe spot outdoors. Everything else on this page is planning for the jobs that are not an emergency.

  • New runs and hookups
  • Pressure testing

If you smell gas

  • Leave the house right away with everyone, including pets.
  • Do not flip light switches, use a phone, light a match or start a car inside the house.
  • Call your gas utility and 911 from outside or from a neighbor's home.
  • Do not go back in until the utility says it is safe.
  • Once the utility has cleared the leak, call a plumber to repair the piping or appliance connection.

A plumber cannot replace the utility's emergency response. The utility checks the meter and the area first. After that, a repair of the house piping can begin.

How a new gas run is planned

  1. Count the loadAdd up the appliances and their demand to size the pipe correctly.
  2. Choose the routeBlack iron, CSST and polyethylene each fit certain routes. Buried lines use materials approved for burial.
  3. PermitNew gas piping usually requires a permit and inspection. Ask how it is handled.
  4. Install and testA pressure test passes before any gas flows.
  5. Light and verifyAppliances are lit and checked for proper operation.

Pipe that is too small starves an appliance. That is common when a new range or tankless unit is added to an old house. The plumber checks capacity at the meter and along the run.

Tankless and high-demand appliances

A tankless water heater, a large range or a whole-house generator can need more gas than the existing line provides. The upgrade can involve a larger pipe, a bigger meter or both. See tankless water heater service for the details on that appliance.

Ask your plumber to explain what part of the upgrade is on your side and what the utility handles.

Signs of a gas problem you can check

  • A sulfur smell around an appliance or the meter.
  • A hiss coming from a pipe or fitting.
  • Dead plants or dry patches over a buried line.
  • A pilot that goes out repeatedly.
  • Yellow or orange flames on a burner that should burn blue.
  • Headaches or dizziness indoors, which can be a sign of combustion gases and need fresh air and a call to emergency services.

Keep a carbon monoxide alarm on every floor and press its test button monthly.
