Sinks in kitchens, baths and laundry rooms

Faucet and Sink Repair in Brighton, CO

A slow drip is never just a drip. It wears the seat, stains the basin and raises your bill. Sink leaks hide under cabinets until the wood warps. A quick look often solves it before a part fails.

Check under the sink first

  • Place a dry paper towel under each connection and look for dampness.
  • Check the shutoff valves for crusty buildup or drips around the stem.
  • Look at the trap for corrosion, hairline cracks or loose slip nuts.
  • Feel the cabinet floor for soft or swollen wood.
  • Note a musty smell, which suggests a slow leak.
  • Close the shutoff valves if water is dripping, and call.

Repair or replace the faucet

Cartridge faucets can often be repaired with a new cartridge. Older compression faucets with worn washers and seats are also worth fixing. Faucets that are pitted, corroded or sold by a brand that no longer stocks parts are better replaced.

A new faucet opens choices. Pull-down sprayers, touchless models and filtered water options are common upgrades. Bring the faucet make if you know it. Otherwise the plumber can recommend what fits your sink holes.

Kitchen sink and disposal

A leak under a kitchen sink can come from the faucet supply lines, the drain basket, the disposal flange or the dishwasher connection. The only way to tell is to dry everything and run each source in turn. If the disposal is the source, read about disposal repair and installation. A drain that keeps clogging in the kitchen often connects to the main line, as covered on the drain cleaning page.

Shutoff valves and supply lines

Every fixture should have its own shutoff. When they seize, you lose the ability to isolate a leak. Replacing old multi-turn valves with quarter-turn valves is a small job that pays off in an emergency. Braided stainless supply lines should be replaced when they show rust, kinks or age. A burst supply line floods a cabinet quickly. If one fails, close the shutoff, then call. See burst pipe repair for broader flooding.

Utility, laundry and outdoor faucets

Laundry boxes, utility sinks and hose bibs share the same causes. Frost-free hose bibs protect against freezing but need hoses removed in winter. See frozen pipe repair for cold weather prevention.
